Mosaic laying instructions
Mosaic and Tile Installation Guide – Professional Instructions for DIYers & Pros
This professional mosaic installation guide supports you in the planning and execution of your construction project – whether in the kitchen, bathroom, shower, outdoor area, or pool. It is suitable for DIY enthusiasts and professional tilers who want to correctly install glass mosaic, natural stone mosaic, metal mosaic, ceramic mosaic, or self-adhesive mosaic tiles.
General Notes
-
Use only mosaics from the same production batch.
-
Use only suitable materials for substrate, installation, grouting, and cleaning.
Why? Unsuitable materials can impair adhesion, durability, and the appearance of the mosaic. Your construction chemistry supplier knows the right products for your application. -
Perform a quality check in advance: Check for color tone, size, and damage.
Why? To ensure consistency and prevent later defects or complaints. -
Natural stone mosaic may show natural variations and indentations.
Why? These are natural features of stone and not grounds for complaints. -
Always do a test layout with one sheet (including grouting). Also, dry lay all or part of the material beforehand.
Why? To detect color or size deviations, batch errors, or incorrect deliveries early – laid material is considered accepted and cannot be claimed. -
Acclimate mosaic and adhesives 24 hours in advance at 20 °C.
Why? To ensure optimal processing and adhesion by adapting to temperature and humidity.
Substrate & Cutting
-
The substrate must be stable, dry, smooth, level, and dust-free.
Why? This ensures safe adhesion and a lasting, even result. -
Irregularities must be leveled or ground.
Why? A flat surface avoids stress points and hollow spaces. -
Cementitious substrates should be primed.
Why? Primer regulates absorbency and prevents moisture penetration.
Especially for foil-backed mosaics: Use only cement-free primers and epoxy adhesives to avoid damage or delamination of the backing. -
Choose tools according to the mosaic material:
-
Glass mosaic: Angle grinder + diamond blade, wet cutter, or mosaic nippers
-
Metal mosaic: Wet cutter or metal saw
-
Natural stone/combo: Stone cutting disc
-
Adhesive Application & Grouting
-
Prepare the substrate: stable, clean, dust- and grease-free.
-
Choose the appropriate adhesive:
-
Glass, metal, transparent mosaics: White epoxy adhesive (e.g., Mapei Kerapoxy)
-
Natural stone: Discoloration-free, quartz-free natural stone adhesive
-
Wet/damp areas: Epoxy adhesive
Why? Correct adhesive choice prevents discoloration, detachment, and damage.
-
-
Apply adhesive evenly using the right notched trowel (e.g., 3×3 or 4×4 mm).
Why? To maximize contact surface and avoid voids. -
Do not let adhesive dry before setting the mosaic.
Why? Dried adhesive no longer bonds properly. -
Use suitable grout:
-
Glass/metal or foil-backed mosaics: Epoxy grout
-
Natural stone/ceramic: Quartz-free, stone-compatible grout
-
Wet areas: Epoxy grout
-
-
Fully fill joints and remove excess immediately.
Why? Hardened residue is difficult to remove and impacts appearance. -
“Striation” effect may occur due to recesses, especially with color contrast.
Why? More grout collects in indentations – this is material-dependent and not a defect.
Protection
-
Impregnate natural stone before grouting, optionally enhance color afterward.
-
Unglazed ceramics may also require stain protection.
Cleaning
-
Avoid acidic, basic, or abrasive cleaners.
Why? These can damage surfaces and cause discoloration or dullness. -
Clean glass mosaic with non-alkaline glass cleaner without abrasives.
-
Clean metal mosaic with soapy water.
-
Use certified cleaners for natural stone (e.g., Lithofin).
Self-Adhesive Mosaics (DIY)
-
For indoor walls only, not wet zones.
-
Substrate must be clean, dry, stable (e.g., painted wall, tile, drywall).
-
Remove protective film only during exact placement.
-
Start with a precisely placed first sheet.
-
Not reusable after removal.
Material Properties & Delivery
-
Up to 5% breakage or loose stones per delivery is standard.
-
Plan 5–10% overage for cuts, adjustments, and edges.
-
Use broken pieces for edge areas to avoid waste.
-
Report defective material immediately for replacement.
